Tenerife – Island of eternal spring and adventure
Go to a place where the sun almost never sets, where Spain’s highest mountain rises and where a new experience lurks around every corner. Welcome to Tenerife, the largest and most popular island in the Canary Islands, rightly nicknamed the “Island of Eternal Spring”. From arid lava fields to lush laurel forests, lively towns and remote villages, beautiful beaches and imposing mountains, Tenerife will captivate you with its diverse landscapes.
Tenerife is undoubtedly dominated by the Pico del Teide volcano (3718 m), the highest mountain in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world measured from the ocean floor. The climb to its summit is one of the most unforgettable experiences, but beware – you must book a permit in advance, as only a limited number are issued daily. Even without a summit adventure, however, Teide National Park will captivate with its lunar landscape of bizarre rock formations and endemic flora.
The northern part of Tenerife is much greener and wetter than the drier south. The steep cliffs of Los Gigantes drop straight into the Atlantic, dense forests alternate with banana plantations. The Masca Valley, with its deep canyon, is a popular destination and a hike through it is a real nature experience. In the picturesque towns of Garachico, Icod de los Vinos or La Orotava, time stands still and history from the days of the Spanish conquistadors breathes over you. Anaga Park, with its laurel forests in the very north-east of the island, is also worth a visit.
The south of Tenerife is a true beach holiday paradise. Miles of fine golden sand line the coastline at Playa de las Américas and the famous beaches of Fañabé and Del Duque. Those who prefer the heat can hide under an umbrella or take a stroll around Puerto Colón’s lush subtropical harbour. For even more exoticism, head to the nearby Jungle Park with its tropical flora and fauna.
The real jewel of Tenerife is its capital Santa Cruz. The charming harbour is full of life, restaurants and historic sites such as the cathedral and the old market. One of the biggest carnivals in the world is a unique experience, where the whole town lives for two weeks to the rhythm of samba and salsa in a sea of glittering costumes. Equally famous is the giant Auditorio concert hall, resembling a giant wave, which is the symbol of the city.
The island of Tenerife will simply captivate you with its diversity. Here you can enjoy romantic moments on the beach by the sound of the ocean, adventurous hikes through the volcanic landscape, discover the historical gems of colonial architecture or enjoy non-stop partying in the capital. All under an ever-blue sky and with a glass of delicious local Malvasia wine. Let yourself be tempted and get to know a unique island that has so many different faces!
